Team Johnston wins Fall Golf ChampionshipPublish Date: 2006-09-12 Nineteen Optimists competed for our club Golf Championship held at the Pine Edge Golf Course near Goessel on Saturday, September 9. Although rainy weather threatened to delay the event, the weather actually turned out to be great and the players had a lot of fun.
The format for the tournament was a three person team "shamble". Spurred on my two eagles and a birdie on the very first hole they played, the team consisting of Joe Johnston, Doug Curtright, Chad Clark and Bob Baldwin (did I say three man team?) won the event by a margin of 13 strokes over their closest competitors. The team of James Melland, Steve Hilgers and Dave Chartier took second in a score card play-off over the team of Jerry Meng, Don Fast and Tom Goldsmith.
Closest to the pin awards went to Steve Hilgers on hole #1 and Don Fast on hole #5. Matt Morrow had the longest putt on #8. Following the tournament, several putting contests were held. Winners during those events were: Matt Morrow, Joe Johnston, Eric Vogel and Mr. President himself, Rick Stein.
